Description
Hey look, gas used to be in cents! (Though it looks like it has been awhile.)
I'm guessing that this gas pump probably reached the end of its working life in the late 1970s--the average gas price for 1979 was $0.86, but by 1980 it was $1.19. However, we should probably consider that the dollar was worth a lot more back then. I popped $.86 into an inflation calculator and came up with $3.07 in 2020 dollars (256.9% cumulative inflation). So, gas wasn't quite the bargain I thought it was!
