Description
The fuzzy center of this Virginia spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana) fascinates me. It is made up of intricate little filaments--just amazing!
Here are a few interesting facts about the Latin and common names. First, the Genus Tradescantia was named after King Charles the First's gardener, John Tradescant. Second, the "wort" part of the name is from the Old English word 'wyrt' which simply meant root or plant. I have no idea where the spider part came from!
