I don't know why, but to me it looks like this scabiosa seed head is scattering pixie dust! (Actually, it's just the rim of the clay pot. But, don't tell anyone.)
All varieties of Scabiosa are also called pincushion flowers. Looking at this seed head, I think that you can see the reason for the name.
They come in both annual (Scabiosa atropurpurea) and perennial varieties (Scabiosa caucasica, Scabiosa columbaria and others). The perennial varieties are evergreen. Perennial or annual, they are all lovely and a magnet for butterflies and bees. Find a sunny spot to add these easy beauties, and you won't be disappointed!
